About Us

Our history

SAYASPORA is a platform for young African women all over the world.

Founded in 2015 in Montreal, Canada, and run by young women from the African diaspora, we strongly believe in the power of representation as a tool for social change and inspiration.

With this in mind, we hope to create, through our events and online content, a space where young people from the African diaspora can assert their opinions, lead, be inspired, and find community.

Today, Sayaspora is a network of over 19,000 people online. Its audience is predominantly female and young (18-34 years old). It is a media platform followed on all continents, in several key cities, including Montreal, Paris, and Bamako.

The 10 years of Sayaspora

10 years of stories, creation, reflection, and community. Since 2015, Sayaspora has been highlighting the voices and journeys of women in the African diaspora through media, cultural, and community projects. Ten years later, we continue this mission: to affirm our heritage, amplify our narratives, and build, together, futures that reflect who we are. Because what we create goes far beyond the digital realm: we build bridges, spaces, and connections. Sayaspora is a collective force in motion. Thank you to our community and allies for continuing to believe in what we are building together.

Our team

Sayaspora is founded by five women: Djamilla Toure, Rydia Sesay, Aurore Iradukunda, Shana Musimbe, and Dorra Bannouri. Together, they founded Sayaspora in Montreal in 2015 and have enabled many young women around the world to freely occupy online and offline spaces to express their truths. Sayaspora began as a blog and has since transformed into a movement that transcends established boundaries, enabling many young women to shine through their writing and expertise.

Managed, conceived, and maintained by young women of African descent living in Canada and working for the good and development of their community, SAYASPORA’s mission is to advocate for female solidarity that transcends borders. Women as agents of change.

Sayaspora projects

Sayaspora is behind several projects that aim to build initiatives that are both inclusive, emancipatory and bearer of progress for the African and Caribbean community around the world.
