Sayaspora is launching a call for applications to fill 2 seats on its Board of Directors with women from the African diaspora, in keeping with its mission.

Whether through stimulating projects like Making your way up, Diaspora Speaking Festival or Culture, Sayaspora’smission is to promote the African diaspora in Canada, which is why we need your help ! 

Description of the organization

Sayaspora is a Montréal-based non-profit organization that amplifies the voices of young women from the African diaspora in Canada through cultural, media, and community-based projects. Through initiatives such as Making Your Way Up, Conversations d’Impact, and Dialogues de la Diaspora, Sayaspora creates spaces for reflection, creation, and dissemination that foster inclusion, representation, and collective empowerment within marginalized communities.

Position description

As part of this recruitment, Sayaspora wishes to prioritize applications from individuals with expertise in human resources and/or media. These two profiles are essential to support the organization’s growth and long-term sustainability:
1. In human resources, we are looking for someone with experience in organizational development, in managing the volunteer and staff life cycle (recruitment, onboarding, engagement, evaluation), as well as in developing internal policies that promote diversity, equity, and well-being in the workplace.
2.In media, we wish to welcome someone who has held leadership or project management positions within a media organization, whether a digital media company or a journalistic outlet. We are looking for someone who has held senior responsibilities in the sector and who excels in digital environments and projects.
This expertise will help strengthen Sayaspora’s governance, visibility, and sustainability, while supporting its mission to amplify the voices and leadership of women from the African diaspora in Canada.

Ideally, the person will have…

In keeping with its mission, SAYASPORA encourages applications from young women of the African diaspora to serve on its Board of Directors. In addition, the following skills and knowledge are required of all SAYASPORA directors:

  • Knowledge of good governance principles;
  • Coordination and facilitation skills;
  • Strong understanding of the issues affecting young women of the African diaspora;
  • Ability to demonstrate mobilizing leadership;
  • Flexibility and adaptability;
  • A sense of initiative and the ability to work as part of a team;
  • Prior experience serving on a board of directors, or relevant training in this area;
  • Experience in fundraising with major private-sector donors;
  • Experience organizing fundraising or business development campaigns targeting donors (an asset);
  • Experience writing grant applications (an asset).
  • For the media profile sought this year, the following skills are also required:
  • Proven experience in leadership or project management positions within a media organization;
  • Excellent command of digital environments and tools;
  • Strong understanding of the strategic and editorial issues specific to the media sector;
  • Ability to advise the organization on its positioning and media development

Role of the Directors

Directors are expected to:

  • Ensure compliance with the laws governing non-profit organizations;
  • Uphold and carry out the mandates and resolutions adopted at the general assembly;
  • Make the decisions necessary for the smooth running of the organization;
  • Oversee the implementation of the organization’s activities;
  • Contribute to the development of the organization and ensure sound financial management.

Expectations and involvement

Term: 2 years, renewable.

Start date: September 2026.

Expected monthly contribution: 10–15 hours per month.

All directors are expected to:

  • Take part in the organization’s annual fundraising efforts;
  • Actively participate in Board of Directors meetings;
  • Represent Sayaspora at various activities when required.
