Volunteer Opportunity: Editor

Sayaspora is currently looking for an Editor for approximately 5 to 10 hours of involvement per week. Description of the organization

Sayaspora is a Montréal-based non-profit organization that amplifies the voices of young women from the African diaspora in Canada through cultural, media, and community-based projects. Through initiatives such as Making Your Way Up, Conversations d’Impact, and Dialogues de la Diaspora, Sayaspora creates spaces for reflection, creation, and dissemination that foster inclusion, representation, and collective empowerment within marginalized communities.

Position description

We are recruiting new volunteers! We are expanding our team to welcome several African women who are ready to work with us toward the betterment of our communities — young women who are agents of change. As a Volunteer Editor at Sayaspora, you will be responsible for writing and editing written content that reflects the values and mission of the organization. You will play an essential role in creating engaging, high-quality texts that amplify the voices of the African diaspora and contribute to Sayaspora's visibility across all its platforms.

The person will have to…

  • Having a strong command of both English and French (spoken and written)
  • Providing writing guidance to writers based on trending topics
  • Recruiting writers and contributors who are already creating content
  • Coordinating the submission of articles and content
  • Coordinating the scheduling of meetings with writers and the editor-in-chief
  • Occasionally writing short press articles and long-form pieces
  • Managing the classification and archiving of articles in the organization's Drive
  • Carrying out any other related tasks connected to the daily operations of the Sayaspora magazine

Ideally, the person will have…

  • Proficiency in French
  • Proficiency in English (an asset)
  • Ability to create engaging content that is consistent with and aligned to Sayaspora's voice and values
  • Familiarity with writing conventions for social media, blogs, and other online platforms
  • Ability to collaborate across multiple departments to meet the organization's written content needs
  • An understanding of issues related to the African diaspora, diversity, and inclusion, reflected in the quality and tone of content produced

  • Submission of a writing sample is required upon application
  • Start date: May 2026
  • Hours of contribution: 5 to 10 hours per week
  • Attendance at team meetings is mandatory
