Sayaspora is currently recruiting volunteer writers for its Magazine. 5 positions are available, including a specialization in current events (quick turnaround).

Whether through stimulating projects like Making your way up, Diaspora Speaking Festival or Culture, Sayaspora’smission is to promote the African diaspora in Canada, which is why we need your help ! 

Description of the organization

Sayaspora is a Montréal-based non-profit organization that amplifies the voices of young women from the African diaspora in Canada through cultural, media, and community-based projects. Through initiatives such as Making Your Way Up, Conversations d’Impact, and Dialogues de la Diaspora, Sayaspora creates spaces for reflection, creation, and dissemination that foster inclusion, representation, and collective empowerment within marginalized communities.

Position description

We are recruiting passionate writers to join the editorial team of the Sayaspora Magazine. As a volunteer writer, you will contribute to producing written content that documents, amplifies, and celebrates the realities of women from African and Caribbean diasporas in all the richness of their heritage.

The person will have to…

  • Writing articles, profiles, columns, or features aligned with the Magazine's themes
  • Proposing article topics consistent with Sayaspora's editorial direction
  • Meeting submission deadlines set by the editorial team
  • Incorporating feedback and edits from the editors
  • Ensuring editorial quality and factual accuracy in every piece produced
  • Participating in team meetings and editorial discussions
  • Contributing to the amplification of voices and experiences from the African and Caribbean diaspora

Ideally, the person will have…

  • A strong interest in writing, journalism, or storytelling
  • Good command of written French — English is an asset
  • Ability to address diverse topics with nuance and depth
  • Respect for deadlines and a sense of editorial responsibility
  • Sensitivity to the issues faced by African, Caribbean, and diaspora communities
  • Self-motivation and teamwork skills
  • For the current events position: responsiveness, factual rigour, and increased availability

Specialized Position — Current Events Writer (quick turnaround)

One of the five positions is dedicated to covering current events requiring a higher level of responsiveness. The selected candidate will need to be comfortable with tight deadlines, capable of producing clear, factually verified content in a short timeframe. Start date: mid-April 2026.

Position features

  • Submission of a CV and writing samples is required upon application
  • Flexible schedule based on the Magazine's editorial cycles
  • Fully remote work
  • Hours of contribution: between 5 and 10 hours per week
  • Attendance at team activities and meetings is mandatory
