Joana Kagayo
Vice President
Originally from Burundi and raised in Canada, Joana recently obtained a Master's degree in Sustainable Development from Uppsala University in Sweden. She decided to pursue further studies after reading "The Challenge for Africa" by Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai and realizing the significant role that the environment plays, often overlooked in the African context. Additionally, she works in the field of climate change and sustainability, alongside publishing a scientific research study exploring aspects of a circular economy/textile in East Africa. Before accepting the role of Vice President as a member of the board of directors, Joana held numerous roles within Sayaspora, allowing her to better understand the organization holistically. She believes that the notion of feminism in Africa reflects the fact that African societies are breaking stereotypes and taboos by creating safe spaces and raising awareness on often neglected issues. For her, Sayaspora is a platform committed to providing women with a forum, a voice, and the necessary skills to articulate their needs and interests within our diaspora.
