It seems as if the world revolves around this small, yet oh so meaningful, piece of paper. <em>If you haven\u2019t realized by now, <\/em>wherever you find yourself in life right now, you have to possess enough of it to get by (but most of us want slightly more than enough because \u201cgetting by\u201d is so old millennium). As we discuss what <em>Making Your Way Up<\/em> looks like, especially within a professional context, we would be remiss to not touch on the issue of finances. Because love it or hate it, cash is still king. Far too many women of color, especially women of the African diaspora, are navigating a professional space with inadequate preparation when it comes to topics of a financial nature. Add onto that the gender pay gap* and you wonder when their income will ever be truly reflective of their talent, skill, and effort.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s a profile of two different women of the African diaspora and their journey navigating life as professionals.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis: 100%;\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\">\r\n<table>\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Industry<\/strong>\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<td>Health Care\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<td>Marketing Communication\u00a0\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Role<\/strong>\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<td>Clinical Technician\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<td>Communications and Business Development Manager\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Experience<\/strong>\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<td>10 months\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<td>6 years\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Salary Range<\/strong>\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<td>More than minimum wage**\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<td>$50-$70k\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Have you ever negotiated your salary?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<td>Yes\u2026it did not end well\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<td>Yes\u2026it never went as planned\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>How many raises have you received since you started working full time?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<td>None\u2026but it\u2019s looking promising\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<td>3\u00a0<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<figcaption>**<em>minimum wage is $14.25\/hr in Quebec<\/em><\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many others who can relate to the above\u2026especially in the area of salary negotiation. As for these ladies, though they both had the confidence and courage to ask for what was necessary for them to do their job, they both have similar endings.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One even says, \u201chaving grown up in an African home, it\u2019s a very taboo subject and I feel like I still have a hard time talking about money.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While you\u2019re a student, or before you start working in a professional capacity, you may excitedly look forward to getting your first \u201cbig\u201d job. \u201cMy first employment was exciting because I didn\u2019t think I would get employed anywhere, especially without experience. I was there for almost 4 years during my undergrad. Of course, I wanted a better job after roughly 2 years with the company, but I realized I had stable shifts that worked well with my school schedule, which was what I preferred at the time since I was already academically drained.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll quickly learn, when you\u2019re at a company there may be some things you want to prioritize, and if they don\u2019t offer that\u2026that company may not be for you anymore. Though her job was allowing her to have stable shifts that matched her academic schedule, once she finished school she quickly left that job because in all her time there she only received a $1 raise.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her priority had shifted from shift guarantee to higher, consistent income guarantee.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing prepares you enough for the reality of everything costing money no matter where you turn. Whether you\u2019re looking to treat yourself or to literally take care of yourself, staying alive in this current society takes dollar dollar bills yo (or whatever currency your government operates in). \u201cThe most shocking thing is that employers don\u2019t understand the economy that we live in\u2026 EVERYTHING COSTS MONEY ABEG.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p>\u201cThe most shocking thing is that employers don\u2019t understand the economy that we live in\u2026 EVERYTHING COSTS MONEY ABEG.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So we literally cannot afford to not be paid well, to not negotiate our salaries, or to continue to be crushed by the gender pay gap. Everyone\u2019s journey is different but there are often too many overlaps when it comes to the discrimination women of color experience financially. One of the best ways to combat that is through education. Learn from the mistakes of those who came before you, learn from your past mistakes, and let your curiosity lead you to dive deeper into different financial topics.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thankfully, we live in a day and age where information is so accessible, tap into it. But be wary, when it comes to certain financial information, one lady interviewed says, \u201cnever trust the internet though, it\u2019s one trifling heifer.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>*The gender pay gap, or gender wage gap, is the average difference between the remuneration for men and women who are working<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ahhh, money, money, money.
