“J’ai toujours voulu travailler.”\u00a0<\/p> \n<\/blockquote> \n \n

Alicia Lashley, a toujours envisag\u00e9 d\u2019exercer un emploi qui serait \u00e9panouissant et passionnant. L’une des raisons derri\u00e8re la priorisation de ces deux aspects, \u00e9tait de voir ses parents travailler de 9h \u00e0 17h dans leurs emplois gouvernementaux.\u00a0<\/p> \n \n

Lorsqu’il s’agit de perspectives d’emploi futurs, nos parents peuvent jouer un r\u00f4le \u00e9norme dans le processus. Cela commence souvent par ce que nous choisissons d’\u00e9tudier.\u00a0<\/p> \n \n

Et, m\u00eame avant cela, nous pouvons observer comment ils \u00e9voluent dans leur travail avant de vraiment comprendre ce que cela signifie.\u00a0<\/p> \n \n

Certains parents parlent carr\u00e9ment \u00e0 leurs enfants dans l\u2019optique d\u2019amoindrir leurs attentes envers le monde du travail. De nombreux enfants afro-canadiens peuvent attester avoir entendu, au moins une fois dans leur vie, leurs parents dire :<\/p> \n \n

“Tu dois travailler deux fois plus dur pour arriver \u00e0 la moiti\u00e9 du chemin.”\u00a0<\/p> \n<\/blockquote> \n \n

Ayant navigu\u00e9 le syst\u00e8me, ils savaient clairement comment ce dernier\u00a0 pouvait \u00eatre envers toutes celles et ceux qui ne r\u00e9pondent pas \u00e0 la norme arbitraire.\u00a0<\/p> \n \n

Mais parfois, nos parents influencent la fa\u00e7on dont nous – la prochaine g\u00e9n\u00e9ration – naviguons dans le monde du travail, surtout lorsqu’il s’agit de faire face au racisme au travail.\u00a0<\/p> \n \n

En tant que coordinatrice de partenariat de niveau interm\u00e9diaire, avant d’entrer dans la vie active, Alicia aimait l’id\u00e9e de travailler. Aujourd’hui, apr\u00e8s de nombreuses ann\u00e9es dans divers domaines, elle d\u00e9clare : ” Je pense que [le travail] exige beaucoup plus d’\u00e9nergie mentale et physique que je ne l’aurais jamais imagin\u00e9. ”\u00a0<\/p> \n \n

Cela peut \u00eatre d\u00fb en partie \u00e0 la taxe \u00e9motionnelle<\/a><\/strong> \u00e0 laquelle Alicia est confront\u00e9e dans ses interactions quotidiennes avec son patron ou par rapport aux relations qu’elle entretient avec ses coll\u00e8gues et ses clients. Une taxe \u00e9motionnelle est d\u00e9finie comme “l’exp\u00e9rience accrue d’\u00eatre trait\u00e9 diff\u00e9remment de ses pairs en raison de sa race, de son origine ethnique ou de son sexe, ce qui a des effets n\u00e9fastes sur la sant\u00e9, provoque un sentiment d’isolement et rend difficile l’\u00e9panouissement au travail”. Selon une enqu\u00eate<\/a> de Catalyst, pr\u00e8s de 60% des femmes de couleur ont fait l’exp\u00e9rience de cette charge.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p> \n \n

“J’ai une mauvaise relation avec mon patron. Je crois qu’il y a eu un peu de racisme de la part de mon patron….. J’ai une relation amicale avec mes coll\u00e8gues mais je suis beaucoup plus proche de mes clients et partenaires”, dit-elle.\u00a0<\/p> \n \n

Alicia n’a pas grandi en parlant de racisme et de pr\u00e9jug\u00e9s avec ses parents. “J’ai simplement grandi en embrassant ma culture en tant que Canadienne noire carib\u00e9enne”, partage-t-elle. En ce qui concerne le point de vue de ses parents sur la fa\u00e7on de naviguer sur le march\u00e9 du travail, elle dit qu’ils l’ont “surtout encourag\u00e9e \u00e0 \u00eatre elle-m\u00eame et \u00e0 travailler fort”.\u00a0<\/p> \n \n

Bien qu’Alicia ait d\u00fb faire face au fait que son patron la jugeait intimidante simplement en raison de son \u00e9thique de travail, elle esp\u00e8re qu’un jour toutes les races seront trait\u00e9es de la m\u00eame fa\u00e7on et que les diff\u00e9rentes cultures seront accept\u00e9es… au travail et en dehors.\u00a0<\/p> \n
