I have a huge nose.<\/span>
\nI can say it.<\/span><\/p>\n

My nose takes up space,<\/span>
\nAnd it has a bump,<\/span>
\nAnd it’s crooked.<\/span><\/p>\n

My father gave me his nose,<\/span>
\nAnd his curly hair,<\/span>
\nAnd his big lips, <\/span>
\nAnd his mother\u2019s uneven eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whenever I look at old photos,<\/span>
\nI confuse myself with my grandmother, <\/span>
\nI lose sight of my face in the mirror.<\/span><\/p>\n

As an Egyptian woman born in the 1930\u2019s.<\/span>
\nShe saw a lot with her eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

She saw revolution, and reconstruction, <\/span>
\nTragedy, colonization, <\/span>
\nEven from within.<\/span><\/p>\n

They are also my father\u2019s eyes. <\/span>
\nThe same eyes that raised me,<\/span>
\nThat wiped the tears from mine and held me,<\/span>
\nThat wrapped me in his blanket and sang me to sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n

But this poem is about his nose.<\/span><\/p>\n

When i look in the mirror I see him, <\/span>
\nAnd her.<\/span><\/p>\n

But how can I hate myself, and love the parts that built me. <\/span>
\nHow can I hate my nose, but love my roots so unconditionally.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not my nose.<\/span>
\nIt\u2019s white supremacy<\/span>
\nIts bad connotations of words like big and wide. <\/span>
\nColonization of the mind.<\/span><\/p>\n

My nose is big,<\/span>
\nAnd it’s me, <\/span>
\nAnd my family.<\/span><\/p>\n

My nose is ugly.<\/span>
