AN INTRODUCTION<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2014 the African American Policy Forum (AAPF) launched the #SayHerName campaign to amplify and politicize the names and stories of Black women, girls, and femmes lost to state violence. The campaign continues to be an essential part of a new global movement<\/span><\/p>\n

I was introduced to #sayhername campaign by Kimberly Crenshaw podcast Intersectionality Matters- Under the Blacklight: Telling Stories of State Violence & Public Silence in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n

For some reason, it took the horrific and brutal murder of George Floyd for people around the world to wake up. For me to wake up. But why now and why this man?<\/span><\/p>\n

Why am I unwilling to stand for the BLACK women who died. We must be equally outraged when state violence. Since the beginning of our time on North America \/ Turtle island.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s not forget that Black women are just as likely to be die.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This text is titled Passing the crown because<\/em> I want to use my platform to uplift t<\/span>he voices that have been crushed under the weight of oppression and violence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who was the first one to say<\/strong><\/span>
\nI can’t breathe?<\/strong><\/span>
\nDoes it matter?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Yes.<\/strong><\/span>
\nWhen a black woman is killed<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe world is silent<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

If we start talking about Black Women<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe world will be turned upside down<\/strong><\/span>
\nWhy are we not talking about<\/strong><\/span>
\nIndia Kager, killed by Virginia Beach police in 2015<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

What about Sandra Bland, killed in custody in Waller County TX in 2015<\/strong><\/span>
\nThere is even a 2018 HBO documentary about her life<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe 4th of the pack<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe family of note-takers is still fighting for<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

What about Korryn Gaines, killed by Baltimore Police in 2016<\/strong><\/span>
\nWhat about Michelle Cusseaux, killed by Phoenix Police in 2014<\/strong><\/span>
\nWhat about Kayla Moore, killed by Berkeley Police in 2013<\/strong><\/span>
\nWhat about Shelly Frey, killed by Houston police in 2012<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Or Marie-Joseph Angelique<\/strong><\/span>
\nAn enslaved woman in Montreal<\/strong><\/span>
\nOn June 21 1734 was on set on fire THEN hanged THEN paraded in the streets by the city of Montreal<\/strong><\/span>
\nOne woman burnt down old Montreal<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This is not an exercise in victimization.<\/strong><\/span>
\nThis is an exercise in resistance.<\/strong><\/span>
\nWe must burn down the system<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I need to harness my voice<\/strong><\/span>
\nMy energy<\/strong><\/span>
\nTowards<\/strong><\/span>
\nBlack women who have been forgotten<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We are up against the world<\/strong><\/span>
\nWho else will say her name if not us?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

What can I contribute to the cause<\/strong><\/span>
\nWhat do I want to fight for?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I want to uplift<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe BLACK women who<\/strong><\/span>
\nHave fallen<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I do not want to victimize<\/strong><\/span>
\nMy sisters<\/strong><\/span>
\nBLACK women like Claudette Colvin<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe real rosa parks<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe dark-skinned<\/strong><\/span>
\nTeenage mother<\/strong><\/span>
\nWho had the guts to stand up to injustices<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

BLACK women who<\/strong><\/span>
\nCarry the past with them<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe rage<\/strong><\/span>
\nAgainst the system of reality<\/strong><\/span>
\nThat sets in motion<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

BLACK women like Kimberly Crenshaw<\/strong><\/span>
\nWho lights the way<\/strong><\/span>
\nFor intersections of women<\/strong><\/span>
\nTo walk the pah<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I see you walking<\/strong><\/span>
\nEnergy positively radiant<\/strong><\/span>
\nMesmerizing<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We are up against the world<\/strong><\/span>
\nWho else will say her name if not us?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I want you to ask yourself<\/strong><\/span>
\nhow are you going to say her name?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

END OF PART 1 – SOME THOUGHTS<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I want to bring attention to Korryn Gaines Poem The Vampire Theory. First highlighted by The story of Say Her Name, this is a play written by Kimberl\u00e9 Crenshaw, G\u2019Ra Asim, and Julia Sharpe-Levine in 2019 and it is based on five years of interviews with this group of women, now called the #SayHerName Mothers Network. The plot entangles the stories of six women victims of police violence and their mothers to weave a tapestry of intergenerational loss, grief, resistance, and rebirth.<\/span><\/p>\n

These mothers gave us permission to uplift their daughters.<\/span><\/p>\n

our blood reeks of<\/strong><\/span>
\nthe loyalty they can smell it in the air<\/strong><\/span>
\nwe’re so used to our own scent we cannot<\/strong><\/span>
\nfathom what we bear they know of our<\/strong><\/span>
\ngreatness I’m just trying to taste it<\/strong><\/span>
\nwhile others are trying to waste it and<\/strong><\/span>
\nthe white man is trying to trace it but<\/strong><\/span>
\neven in trying to find what is truly<\/strong><\/span>
\nbeyond divine, they could never go back<\/strong><\/span>
\nfar enough we’re way beyond that time<\/strong><\/span>
\ntherefore in the meantime, they cut the<\/strong><\/span>
\nqueens and kings with crime used to hang<\/strong><\/span>
\nthis up with strings to trees and other<\/strong><\/span>
\nthings now they took guns with beings<\/strong><\/span>
\nand wrist rings same old ankle chains<\/strong><\/span>
\nstill beating less the same ain’t<\/strong><\/span>
\nnothing changed except now they’re<\/strong><\/span>
\ntrying to survive can’t find any use for<\/strong><\/span>
\nus alive not knowing we can’t die so<\/strong><\/span>
\nwhile they’re chasing blood snatching<\/strong><\/span>
\nbodies eating babies and raping our <\/strong>minds go ahead and sex with all kind<\/strong><\/span>
\nthey can only become us with there be<\/strong><\/span>
\nthrust as for us they only raised our<\/strong><\/span>
