Sayaspora is calling for applications to fill two positions on its board of directors with women from the African
diaspora, in line with its mission.

Whether through stimulating projects like Making your way up, Diaspora Speaking Festival or Culture, Sayaspora’smission is to promote the African diaspora in Canada, which is why we need your help !

Description of the organization

Sayaspora is a media outlet that amplifies the voices of women from the African diaspora in Canada. Created in 2015 in Montreal, Sayaspora was founded on the belief in the power of representation as a tool for social change and inspiration.

Managed, conceived, and led by women of African descent living in Canada who work for the good and development of their community, Sayaspora’s mission is to empower women from the African diaspora through a community, safe spaces, and resources that contribute to their personal, professional, and cultural well-being. Today, Sayaspora is an online network of more than 20,000 people with a predominantly female and young (18- 35 years old) audience.

Position description

As part of this recruitment process, Sayaspora wishes to prioritize applications from individuals with expertise in human resources and/or partnership development.

These two profiles are essential to supporting the organization's growth and sustainability:

  • In human resources, we are looking for someone with experience in organizational development, volunteer and staff lifecycle management (recruitment, onboarding, engagement, evaluation), and developing internal policies that promote diversity, equity, and well-being in the workplace.
  • In partnership development, we are looking for someone with proven skills in external representation, creating and maintaining strategic partnerships with institutional, community, and private actors, as well as resource mobilization (sponsorships, collaboration agreements, dissemination or funding partnerships).

This expertise will help strengthen Sayaspora's governance, visibility, and sustainability, while supporting its mission to amplify the voices and leadership of women from the African diaspora in Canada.

The person will have to…

  • Ensure compliance with the laws governing non-profit organizations;
  • Respect and carry out the mandates and resolutions adopted at general meetings;
  • Make decisions that are useful for the smooth running of the organization;
  • Ensure the implementation of the organization's activities
  • Contribute to the development of the organization and ensure its sound financial management;

Ideally, the person will have…

In line with its mission, SAYASPORA encourages young women from the African diaspora to apply to sit on its board of directors. In addition, the following skills and knowledge are required for all SAYASPORA directors:

  • Knowledge of good governance principles;
  • Coordination and facilitation skills
  • Good knowledge of issues affecting young women from the African diaspora;
  • Ability to demonstrate motivational leadership;
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Initiative and ability to work in a team;
  • Previous experience on a board of directors or relevant training;
  • Experience in fundraising from major donors in the private sector;
  • Experience in organizing fundraising or business development campaigns targeting donors (an asset);
  • Experience in writing grant applications (an asset);
  • Organizational development skills (an asset).

Expectations and involvement

Term of office: 2 years with the possibility of renewal.
Start date: January 2026
Expected monthly contribution: 10-15 hours per month
All board members are expected to:

  • Be involved in annual fundraising efforts;
  • Actively participate in board meetings;
  • Represent Sayaspora at various events when required.
