A series of creative publications capturing the essence of our uniqueness

SPEAK SERIES. A bilingual* (EN/FR) documentary video series based in Montreal capturing conversations between youth stemming from the African diaspora.

With SPEAK SERIES, we hope to explore the diverse experiences and challenges that face youth stemming from the African diaspora, bridge the gap between the continent and the diaspora and explore topics that have been vital in shaping our experiences such as race, gender, sexuality, social mobility, mental health, processes of identity making and so on.

This third episode deals with the mental health of the African diaspora, the importance of consulting and the obstacles to the various forms of help available. We will also discuss our belonging to a minority group and the influence this has on our mental health. It is therefore in a context of exchange.

Episode 1 explores the important topic of identity and the trope of the “authentic African”, questioning the idea of authenticity and the qualification of one’s African identity. We hope to open up an honest discussion about an issue that is pertinent to many African youth living in the diaspora, who often find themselves stuck in between two worlds but not feeling a sense of belonging to either.
